Am I the only one who noticed that the old republic's tech as far as ships, weapons and even soldiers goes was more advanced and certainly more versatile than the empire's? Everything from their starfighters to their blaster rifles were in some way more adaptable, versatile or just plain better than their imperial counterparts. I think the empire mainly ditched quality and specialization for low tech, low cost, one size fits all solutions. Even their more specialized tech, tie interceptors and sniper rifles were used sparingly while the republic had a good mix of interceptors, heavy fighters and gunships, as well as multiple and highly adaptable infantry weapons. You see clones with different and/ or modified weapons while stormtroopers used the same E-11 blaster rifle or a slightly different variant of it.

Yes that's a really good point. I'm afraid there isn't an awesome Star Wars universe answer to that... it has rather more with movie props production in the period the original trilogy was made. During production of the original trilogy everything was built from scratch, or adapted from something which already existed (the E-11 was an adapted Sterling Mark 4 sub machine gun - originally designed in 1945, the heavy blaster rifles used by the Empire were modified German MG 42s - originally designed in 1942). In comparison the Prequel Trilogy had a bigger more well equipped design department, access to better resources, a much bigger budget, computer generated design, etc. :D

Yea, I know that all, and I've actually heard that they modified the sterlings to fire blanks in order to know when to add a blaster bolt special effect, and during a couple scenes during episodes 4 and 5, you can actually see bullet casings ejecting from the blasters. But you'll also notice that this trend of low tech, low cost solutions extended into their shipbuilding as well. The X-wing and even the older late clone wars era Y-wing are both superior foes to the tie fighter. Even the majority of the imperial star destroyers lacked missile tubes and proton torpedo launchers while both the ventor and victory class destroyers had missiles and torpedoes.

Because military tecnology has adcanced since then. They took ideas from modern military like things. Thats why its seems much mroe advanced. Star wars rebels might add in stuff like that.

no doubt that's part of it. but i still think in some ways the empire took a step backwards from the republic. compare a clone trooper's training, equipment and combat effectiveness to the stormtroopers. yes, the tech used by the stormtroopers in the movie will naturally look older because of what they had to work with at the time, but they also had a much smaller variety of weapons as well. they had maybe 3 unique blasters in total, the E-11, the E-11s (sniper) and the E-web repeating blaster (machine gun). the rest of their weapons were mainly modified E-11 rifles, only the sniper variant actually being different in function or operation. clone troopers had DC-15A blaster rifles and many of them were modified with addons such as grappling guns and scopes. they had DC-15S blaster pistols which differed greatly from the rifle, as well as the DC-17 issued to special ops units. they fielded a variety of secondary weapons such as fletchet guns, rocket launchers, mortars, grenade launchers, repeaters, non standard side arms, anti vehicle mines and other such weapons.

storm trooper armor varied little between specific troops. there was standard stormtrooper armor, TIE pilot flight suits, snow trooper armor, scout trooper armor and not much else. all other variants such as armor worn by shadow troopers and space troopers is either extremely rare or only used in large numbers by imperial remnent forces not controlled by darth sidious. clones had over a dozen different armor variants including multiple standard variants, pilot variants, shock trooper variants, customized armor, armor worn only by officers, commando armor, ARC trooper armor, aqua trooper armor, jet trooper armor, scout armor, armor with added modules for medics, grenadiers, sharpshooters, engineers... they just had far more variety.

Thank you! I use photoshop for the lightsabers: you basically draw a white rectangle the approximate size of the blade, then add an outer glow effect, and then add the color to make the blade blue, green, or red. I learnt it from another artist here on deviantART... you can see his awesome tutorial here fav.me/d3g871i :D
